Chapter 3

Not only is Adam held as the prime suspect for the death of Marnie Myers and Megan Chesterfield but he's also just been given a curfew by Sheriff Brownley and his father. This is somewhat my fault but i can't pinpoint why that is.
'What could have resulted in the death of both girls who dated Adam and the not so innocent mother of one? This town has three bodies on our hands and the killer is still out there, roaming freely like he doesn't deserve to spend a lifetime behind bars.'
I slam my laptop shut and trudge downstairs. I have to see Carter and Adam over at Caesars. Maybe apologize to them for the role i played in this mess even though i did nothing wrong. I was only trying to help find the killer who is still on the loose.
"Be home before 9" My mom exclaims quickly before i can step a foot out of the house. "What?! Why?" I ask turning over to glance at her as she cuts carrots and slides them of the board into a bowl- probably making dinner. "Last time you got arrested." She says not bothering to look up at me. "Fair" I mumble and turn back to leave.
I unlock the doors to my car and settle into the warm seat and exhale a held up cold breath while closing my eyes then i turn on the engine and pull out.
"I'm really sorry Adam." I say bluntly as i slide into the booth where Carter and Adam sit chatting most likely about me. "oh hey Anna" He says surprisingly smiling.
"What are you sorry for?" Carter asks sipping up her coca-cola while staring at me and tapping her fingers against the round table. Are they playing me or something? Cause one time i accidentally shaved off Carter's eyebrows and Adam's hair and they acted cool with it for a whole week until i lowered my guard and they shaved off one of my eyebrows and cut off a chunk of my hair. They're totally playing with me.
"Um... Making you find a dead body, getting us arrested and moving Adam to the top of the suspect list?" I state and ask while trying to find any hint of anger and pretense on each of their faces.
"No problem, we are ahead of the police now anyways" Carter cheers patting Adam on the back while leaning forward so strangers don't listen in on our conversation. "Plus you can make it up to me by helping us find who the goddamn killer is so Sheriff Brownley gets off my ass" Adam whispers while letting his eyebrows twitch like he does when he gets super excited. But excited for what? Finding a body?
I nod and smile at them. When I gave Brownley the flash drive yesterday he read the letter and didn't seem shocked. He was surprised to hear that Susan had hidden a body in the woods which meant she could have possibly committed murder but he didn't seem shaken by the fact that there was a letter which means, he probably already knew there would be a letter. But how?
"That's your thinking face what is it?"Adam calls me back from my thoughts by waving his hand in front of my face. "Sheriff Brownley knew there was a letter but never knew where it was, we found it, but how did he know? I think somehow there may be a clue just waiting for us in..." I explain then trail of for Carter's benefit. She's such a princess.
"Don't say it!" She cries sinking into her seat for effect. "Susan's house." I finish turning my head slightly to the left and shooting her a small smile for comfort. "Susan's haunted house you mean!" Carter exclaims pushing herself back up and frowning.
"Oh don't be a wimp!" I laugh, "You're the one that said you wanted to help catch the killer."
"Yeah but the killer might just be lurking around the house waiting to kill us," She sighs then scoffs as she rests her head on Adam's shoulder "And i for one don't want to be killed."
I stare at her then notice them!- What's going on here? Why is there a them? These questions linger but i don't bother asking but just shake them off and huff. "Don't be a wimp! Just suck it up." I muse starting to realize that this conversation will turn out to not be prolific.
"Don't worry Carter we're going to be..." He starts then trails himself off by gawking at something behind me. Soon i notice Carter's eyes drift to that same something right behind me so i turn around to see not a something, but a someone. A girl around our age with silk long black hair and impeccable style. By the way she's dressed i have to assume she's related to the Granger's.
"Wrong time to be visiting." I mutter under my breath because after all, our town is suffering with the blood of three bodies on our hands. "Uhuh!" Carter hums in support as she finally lifts her head from Adam's shoulder.
She turns and glances our way looking at us confused when we notice we've been staring, with our mouths open. I have to admit, she's very pretty. We quickly turn away but Adam looks back at her as she makes her way into the booth opposite us and places her black shimmery purse on the table then turns to look at Adam who quickly turns away.
"Off limits bro." I chuckle lifting my eyebrows at Adam then wiggling them. "Whatever!" Adam defends. Immediately Carter's facial expression changes from okay to sad and angry. Whatever it is i think it's best i don't know. Plus, we've always known Adam as the player type and the not for one girl kinda guy. Not now to think he's changed, the affair he had with Marnie proved it.
I turn to briefly glance at the new girl who i've never seen around town before proving she's new to town when i notice we we're the only ones here before she showed up. "I better get going, my mom wasn't pleased with me getting arrested yesterday." Carter states then stands up in a hurry. "Okay?" I bemuse as she walks off into the night. I shrug and turn back to Adam who shrugs and shakes his head as well.
I shift over next to Adam where Carter was and discuss some school stuff, killer stuff and parent stuff. I connect well with Adam because he too understands what it's like to have only one parent and to loose one twice. My biological father died when i was little due to a car accident and now my step-father has left us for some whore. Adam's mom died from cancer four years ago and his step-mom turned out to be gay so, she left them. What is it with steps these days?
"I'll see you tomorrow Adam." I say as we both trudge through the snow to our cars then separate leaving the girl back alone at Caesar's i ride off.
***
I walk in through the entrance doors of the school i've attended since i could. I see India Granger handing out flyers, probably for her so called "Elite Dance Team". I sigh and take the turn to my locker where i see a kid i've only seen a few times in this school which is a hundred more than Carter or Adam sitting cross-legged in front of my locker. Like he wants to be invisible, i sort of get that. "Excuse me" i say as politely as i can mutter.
He pulls of his earphones as he looks up at me and says "What?". "You're right in front of my locker, move it!" I exclaim loosing my patience like i always do though i'm working on it. "Oh!" He exclaims realizing he's obstructing my way and shifts to the left giving way for me. "Now i'm in front of my locker." He chips fake smiling and turning back to his computer that rests on his laps unevenly. I flick my eyebrows up then exhale fairly warm breath and open my locker to exchange books in and out.
I stare at him again before walking off to catch up to Carter who is probably at her locker when i literally bump into someone. Books and papers which aren't mine fly around before it and us land on the floor. "Oh i'm so sorry!" I apologize quickly as i hear a female voice groan in pain. I look up to see who it is, the girl from yesterday. If she really is a Granger then this will not go down well.
"It's okay," Her soft voice sighs quietly, "It's my fault." Okay this girl is definitely not a Granger. India would never have apologized or accepted my apology. She looks up at me and notices me staring then says, "Hey it's you!"
"Me?" I ask helping her gather and pick up her books and papers. "Yeah, from that diner" she recalls standing up and sliding strands of hair across her forehead and tucks it behind her ear. "Oh yeah!" I exclaim to let her know i remember her as well, "Hi!"
"Hello!" She responds back. That's when i notice she has an accent, an English accent. "I'm Anayis... Hart!" I exclaim extending my hand forward for her after remembering to always add my last name, apparently it shows courtesy and etiquette and by the way she's dressed, i'd better show some. "Drew, Drew Heavens." She smiles accepting my hand. I've heard that name before but i can't put my finger on it. Heavens, Heavens, Heavens. Where have i heard or seen that name before?
"Oh um... could you help me though?" She quickly asks, "I'm looking for room 17."
"Biology, right?" I ask taking her schedule. "Yes." She breathes out thankful that i know. "I'm heading there now, coming?" i smile as sweetly as possible. She nods and walks beside me to Bio class.
~~
The tardy bell rings for lunch and somehow I run into Drew again. "Oh hey!" She waves coming over to me taking slight and gracious steps. "Hi!" I exclaim in response. "At least i sort of know someone in this maze." She chortles lightly smiling at me. "Don't worry you can hang with me." I smile back. I'm not really a loquacious or gregarious person but she really needs my help and this is the same way Carter took me under her wings, only seems fair i do the same for someone else.
"Here!" I say sliding into my usual lunch table with Carter and Adam so Drew joins us. "You eat alone?" She asks as if concerned for my well being. Funny, when i was 7 diagnosed with Schizoid PD and it sort of left when i was 13 but then i had adapted a new personality disorder, Avoidant PD. But that's all gone now except for my mild erratic behavior, my inability to feel compassion sometimes, my passive aggression and low assertiveness.
"No," I laugh as she slides in next to me. I look up and see the two faces i'm used to seeing right about this time. "Here they are."
"Hey!" Carter exclaims glancing at me but doesn't say anything about the person sitting right next to me.
"Hey!" Adam exclaims this time to Drew and not to me. Can they not just say hello to both of us. "Hi!" Drew smiles at both of them. "I remember you guys from the diner last night."
"Yeah, i'm Adam, and this is Carter," Adam introduces as he nudges Carter on the arm with his elbow at the last part. "Uh... Hey!" Carter stammers back to reality... and politeness. I wonder what's up with her. She's been acting off lately.
"You okay?" I ask her as she picks on her cut up carrot bits. "Yeah!" She exclaims quickly while nodding to reassure me of her sane mental state.
"Okayyy?" I sort of ask while dragging the y to emphasis disbelief as i shrug.
After dog years of learning and boredom the tardy bell finally rings informing us that school is over.
"See you at that place later." Adam waves before speeding off down the road. Sometimes i wonder how he paced his driving test and who gave him his license.
I nod to Carter and sigh before entering into my car. As i grip the wheel tightly i stare straight ahead at the road making gentle turns and bends until finally i'm at my house. I don't bother parking up my driveway or killing the engine since i'll be out of here soon. I pick up my phone from where it lays on the passenger seat and dial Adam before Carter.
In seconds Carter races out of her house and literally jumps into my car and i drive off. "What are we going to look for again?" Carter asks as i park in front of the haunted house. "Anything that will explain anything." i sigh before coming out of the car and slamming the door behind me. The wind rasps around carrying my hair with it letting it fly around like a fan's directly blowing to it. "Come on," I whisper to Carter as i gesture to the front door just as she gets out of the car.
We stand and wait on the porch for Adam who arrives with a bag most likely filled with the stuff we need. "A torch, lamp, spanner, screw driver, hammer, laser detector and rope." He mutters stating everything within the black carryall.
"Rope?" I ask. "What do we need rope for?".
"If we get caught with rope how are we gonna look?" Carter joins in questioning Adam's reasons for bringing rope.
"What if we need it?" Adam defends. I shrug and say whatever! before grabbing the laser detector and sighing.
I bend down on my knees and hands and shine the laser light through the door to see if there's a motion sensor by the door or something. Unfortunately, there is. "It's from the wiring." I state clicking the laser off. "Connected to..." Trailing off i begin to look for an electric output or input. "The Doorbell!" I exclaim when i finally find something.
"So how do we turn off the sensor?" Carter asks in her nervous voice. Don't worry, this will be in and- Wait, did she say we?"
"How do turn off the sensor?" I start, "Easy. Screw driver!" Adam hands me the yellow electricity sensing screw driver that i've always wanted. I unscrew the screws holing the doorbell circuit to the wall then tinker with a few wires withing and... voila!
I bend down again and shine the laser under the door to see and it looks like i got it. "Done!" I say brushing any lingering dirt of my clothes. Adam opens the door slowly and everything seems the same. I trudge into the really dark house behind Carter after looking around to see if anyone has spotted us.
Together we start searching around for clues that could tell us why we have three dead bodies in the mortuary. I finger the old large wooden bookshelf that sits on the beautifully maroon carpeted floor making sure to feel the old edges of books i've read and wish to read. Most i haven't even seen before. I walk over to her work area by the corner and squeeze in in front of the red puff office chair. Pushing it back with my leg i scheme through all the stationary and old documents on the desk. By the edge there is a green desk lamp. I stretch my hand to it to turn it on even though i know the power's out here. It turns on. "Batteries." I scoff-laugh glad that i can see what's on the desk better.
"Found something?" Carter asks popping her head from a cornered wall so she can see what i'm up to.
I scan the entire desk, three drawers attached on the right in rows. "Um..." I start as i open and close each one. First one, nothing, just A4 papers for printers. Second Pencils, lots and lots of pencils and some old papers, some of which are for her store. "No nothing really just..." I continue as i open the third, Just old documents in files and some carelessly left out. "Pape-" Bingo!
"What?" She asks appearing out of the corner her body is hidden and walks over to the desk.
"A phone." I say eyeing it carefully. "Why didn't the police take her phone?" I ask pulling out a zip-lock bag with a blue and green smartphone inside. Who puts a phone in a zip-lock?
"Maybe they didn't see it?" She says then asks equally unsure. "Impossible, the cops searched this place thoroughly".
"Hey i found something!" Adam says pacing over to us with something in his hand. "Better than what i found?" I ask hoping so.
"A key!" Adam exclaims with sparks in his eyes. "A key? Really? It might just be a spare to her shop." I say. "Yeah!" Carter agrees. "It's not the key that's fascinating," He says placing it on the desk. "It's where i found it."
My face changes from seriously? to go on, i'm intrigued! "I found it in a ziplock bag hidden at the bottom of her pool. "Woah!" i exclaim very very very much intrigued! "What were you doing at the pool area?" Carter asks picking up the key and inspecting it.
"So i was in her room and i saw a case with a key palate where it was supposed to be but i couldn't find the key, i looked out her window and i saw something sparkling below in her pool." He explains. "From that i think that Susan must have put in in the bag an thrown it out her window and into the pool, but why?" I ponder aloud. "Weird." Carter sighs.
"So, what did you guys find?" He asks. "Oh yeah! I almost forgot," I respond pulling up the bag with the phone inside. "Ziplock!" Carter exclaims probably wondering if the phone was meant to have been tossed in the pool too. But why? The faces of my friends says that we all have the same thought.
I pull out the phone from the bag- "Wait! Finger prints." Carter exclaims. I sigh and pull it out anyway.
I click the button at the top and the phone turns on. "Why did she want to hide you?" i ask the phone even though i know it's an inanimate object. "A missed call!" Adam exclaims hovering over my shoulder as soon as the phone's up.
I click the call log and tap on the voicemail. "If the girl is on to your involvement in the accident then it's either you erase her from the picture or you erase yourself. There must be no connection between me and that night! If not, i'll do you the favor of erasing yourself from the picture, you and your daughter!".
Chills run down my spine as soon as it's done. The voice was dark, husky and carrying threats, none i've heard before. It's unfamiliar. "Who was that?" Carter asks even though she knows we couldn't possibly know for sure. "Most likely Mr. Blue!" Adam exclaims pacing around with his fingers massaging his temples.
"There are messages." I say opening her emails and chats. "All from Mr. Blue,"
"He sounds really scary." Carter squeaks leaning in to see the screen better. I open up a recent message.
The key Susan! Now! Give me the key or i'll make sure you never see your daughter alive again! The girl took something of mine and you hid it away. I know where you kept it but i need the key! Hand it over or that girl, your daughter and you will pay!
wow, very detailed and descriptive. "My God!" Carter stares in horror. "Poor Susan!"
At that moment the battery dies and i see only my reflection on the screen. "So what do we do now Anne?" Adam asks pacing to me. "Do we give the cops or-""No!" I interrupt quickly. "I don't know! Just... Give me a second to think."
I turn to the desk where the key lays and so do Carter and Adam. "We see what that key unlocks. At all costs!"
